Dino Schultüte
For all of you living in the German-speaking world, and with some time on your hands, a DIY you will like, and your first-grader will love. A T-Rex Schultüte!
You will need:
1. Thick cardboard, colour of your choice (ours is red, as the shop was out of green);
2. Some (A4 would be enough) white cardboard for teeth, nails and eyes, no need to be too thick;
3. Black paper for eyes and nostrils;
4. A LOT of glue;
5. Scissors, ruler, pencil and patience. :)
I do not have exact measurements for this project, as I just used the longest side of the cardboard sheet I bought. But I hope you would get the point looking at the photos. In any case, I suggest making your dino smaller than mine, so it's easier to carry.
Start with the body pieces:

Start with the body pieces:
Fold each piece as shown...
... and then glue together.
Cut two pieces to extend the tail (if your cardboard is coloured on both sides, you would only need one piece).
Glue to the end of your body.
Glue together the body pieces, with the tail extensions in the middle.
Draw a pentagon for a lid. Each side should equal the top parts of the body, or be about a mm wider. Draw an allowance around your pentagon (in my case, 2cm, but now that I've tested it, I would recommend at least double that). Cut out.
Right side out, fold up the allowance and glue the lid together.
Before the glue is dry, make sure you test your lid on the body, so you can make corrections as needed.
There you go! You have the body ready:
Now, for the head. I used the great instructions here, just enlarged the template, and modified it slightly.
So this is the top of the head:
Where we glue teeth:
And the bottom jaw:
WHere we also glue teeth.
This is how you fold in the tongue.
And an enlarged tongue support in the making.
I glued the head together, as my dinosaur will not be moving...
... unless my child decides to use it as a mask...
Finally, I closed the head and attached it to the lid.
Same thing, side view:
And then, with eyes and nostrils (sorry you can't see the nostrils from this photo). N liked the round eyes, but we did try several shapes to see which look best.
Now, pieces needed for each leg:
And how you glue them together.
Don't forget the toenails!
The arms are much easier to make and to attach.
Now you fill it all up with goodies, and you're good to go. Happy first school day!
